Meet Oscar - The Golden Dog
Hopefully, you will have many great years with your puppy or adult dog, filled with fun and adventure. However, even if you plan to spend nearly all your time with your dog. Circumstances can change; you might have to change jobs, you might have to move house, or you may need to go to a wedding or a funeral.
This is why I believe you should practice leaving your dog alone as a part of your puppy and dog training, which will help you have the best, happiest, and most well-rounded furry best friend possible.
When a dog is separated from its owner or left alone, it might get frightened and distressed. This is known as separation anxiety or separation-related disorder. If you suspect your dog is suffering from separation anxiety, you should consult your vet.
Separation anxiety can be caused by various factors, including your dog's inexperience with being away from you or a fear of something in the house. Their personality, genetics, and life experiences can all influence how your pooch can cope on their own.
Because pain and underlying medical issues might make your dog fearful of being alone, you should always have them checked out by a vet if they appear to be suffering from separation anxiety.
If your veterinarian determines that your dog is suffering from separation anxiety and there is no medical cause, a professional dog trainer will be the best person to help.
The maximum amount of time dogs should be left alone is four to six hours, although every dog is different. Their age and previous experiences determine the length of time they can be left alone. Four hours, for example, would be rather lengthy for a particularly energetic, young puppy but could be sufficient for an elderly dog.
There may be times when you must leave your dog alone for more extended periods than usual, which is a departure from their regular pattern. To keep them occupied, provide them with a variety of interactive toys or feeders. Make sure they'll be secure if they're left alone with these.
If you notice early signs of dog separation anxiety, you should adapt your dog training and daily habits before it becomes a significant problem. Try things like this:
Get another dog
If you only have one dog and you have the space and money to have another dog, then this is a great option. Dogs in multiple dog households are much less likely to have dog separation anxiety. This is because they are never truly alone, even if all the humans in the house have left for a while. They will feel safer and less anxious if they know another dog is in the place.
Before leaving your dog alone at home, the best thing you can do is make sure they get some exercise. This exercise should be appropriate to the breed and fitness level of your dog or dogs.. When you take your doggie for a morning walk or run on a hands-free leash, they are likely to fall asleep shortly afterward. This allows you to leave home without incident.
Even if you have exercised them, they might wake up and recover before you return. So. make sure they have something to do. Instead of their typical meal bowl, use food puzzle bowls, trays, and toys to keep them occupied and challenged. Some dog toys have different levels of difficulty, so you can keep your dog active and entertained while you're away. If they become bored, they may become destructive, so give them small jobs and enjoyable toys to play with, but make sure none of the objects are chewable or swallowable.
FOR A 100% LIFETIME WARRANTY
Your new puppy or adult furry best friend is likely to have never been alone before. It's unreasonable to expect them to go from constant company to spending the entire day without you while you're at work. If you must leave them for an extended period, make sure they are in a safe environment. For this, a secure place, such as an exercise pen or crate, is ideal. They will regard their confinement area as a place to relax rather than punishment if they properly use a crate or exercise pen. Alternatively, you can use baby gates to confine your puppy to a restricted and secure area.
You leaving home should be no big deal to your dog, and they should expect you to come back.
I know you will want to fuss with your dog, and you will also miss them. However, it would help if you kept leaving and returning to the home as low-key as possible. Do not make a big deal of leaving, and don't be overly excited when you return. Only greet your dog when they have calmed down. They will miss you and want to go out with you, but when you do leave, they should accept it and be happy to wait for your return.
If all training fails and your dog is still really anxious when you leave, then it could be that your only other options are doggie daycare, dog sitters, and dog walkers. They can be expensive but can be helpful if you can afford them.
You may train two dogs in precisely the same way, and they may end up being different. This is because even dogs of the same breed can have different personalities, and some will naturally be more prone to being anxious than others.
Just try your best and do not become anxious yourself.
