Meet Oscar - The Golden Dog
Herbivores need to eat plant food all day, every day, because of the low nutrient density, omnivores can eat less often than that, and carnivores can go days without food because they are eating calorie and nutrient-dense meat and fish.
Dogs are omnivores, but they are towards the carnivore end of the omnivore scale. This means they can survive on plant food for short periods, but they need animal protein and fat to thrive.
This will depend on multiple factors, and there are no set rules, so do a bit of research and experiment because every dog is unique.
Here are some things to consider:
Age is important when devising a feeding strategy because a dog's metabolism will change throughout its life…

Breed and size are necessary when considering how often to feed your pooch.
Generally, smaller dogs have higher metabolisms and smaller stomachs. So, they will require smaller portions, and therefore may need to be fed more often to ensure you give them enough nutrition and calories.
Larger dogs generally have a slower metabolism and larger digestive systems. This means it is possible to feed them larger meals, which could mean you might be able to provide them less often than smaller dogs. Again, you need to make sure they get everything they need daily.
Every doggie will have an average amount of protein, vitamins, minerals, and calories it needs daily to remain healthy and stay at a good weight.
The most efficient way to do this is to feed them the highest quality meat and fish you can afford, as it is the most nutrient-dense food available. We believe the best way to do this is with a raw food diet like the BARF or Prey Diet. It is also the closest way you can feed them to match how their digestives systems evolved over centuries due to what they ate in the wild.
The lower the quality of food you give them, the more you will need to feed them to hit their dietary needs. Giving them the highest quality food possible may enable you to provide them less often than feeding them low-quality kibble or canned food. You are looking for food with the least amount of filler, preservatives, and cheap energy sources such as soy and corn.
Whatever the average feeding schedule required for a specific breed will need to be adjusted for lifestyle changes.
A Collie with a typical owner will require less feeding than a Collie that works on a farm. A Terrier that walks around the park will need less feeding than one that is taken on regular long day hikes with a hands-free leash. Finally, a dog involved in sport will require more feeding than a dog of the same breed that is not engaged in sport.
Here at Pet Dreamland, we believe in feeding dogs quality food and maintaining a healthy weight for the dog, allowing them to live their best lives.
There are individual circumstances to factor in, but we recommend two meals a day for a standard-sized dog, with an average activity level—one meal for breakfast and one meal at teatime.
We think this is the sweet spot, so the dog is hungry and ready for food but isn't hungry and anxious that they haven't been fed.
Sometimes dogs seem to be better timekeepers than people. They have a perfect sense of time. So, it is best to keep a regular feeding schedule, and however many times you decide to feed them per day, make sure you provide them at the exact times. This means they will not be begging for food all day or become stressed when they think they have missed a meal.
If you constantly feed them at 5 pm, you will be surprised at how accurately they can tell when 5 pm is.
