SWAG

It is a sport for dogs to compete in. Handlers lead a dog around an obstacle course. They are judged on speed and accuracy. It is an excellent sport for both the dog and handler/owner, aka you. The handler leads the dog around a set course, using visual and audible instructions. No leading them around on a lead, unfortunately! That's too easy.
There are official competitions you can enter and clubs you can join. But if that all seems a bit much for you, then there is nothing stopping you from buying your dog agility equipment and setting up your courses in your garden or park.
Firstly if you want to get your dog involved in agility training, then go for it. However, if you're going to compete at a high level, some dog breeds are better than others. You need intelligent dogs that are easily trained, focused, not shy or over-excitable, and have a combination of good quickness and agility.
You are looking at dogs like Collies, Sheppard's, Retrievers, Terriers, and Spaniels.
There are no hard and fast rules. You can start a dog on agility at any age, young or old. But be sensible about it. A young puppy shouldn't be jumping (or falling) off things, and an older dog shouldn't either.
So the ideal time is when the dog is physically capable of doing so and has learning capacity. Just like a child learns new languages better than an adult, a puppy is like a sponge, and it is a great time to get them learning this great technique.
Dog agility can be a sport, but it can just be a healthy exercise regime and an excellent part of your general behavior training. After all, if you train your dog to sit, lie, come, stay, heel, it is a logical next step to get them to go up, around, and through obstacles.
Whether you are training for events or just doing it for fun and enrichment, you will need some necessary equipment.

Agility training is fantastic and great fun. It includes a lot of functional and natural movements. You are not asking the dog to do anything it wouldn't on an excellent play walk. However, you are telling them to do it at specific times and on command. Even though they know how to do everything in the wild, you need to teach them the commands required to see what you want when you want.
Like all training, you need to reinforce good behavior positively. The dog needs to know precisely what command you are giving and what they are meant to do with that command.
So you will need different commands for every other kind of obstacle you have. They need to be short, clear, and extra. If they all sound the same, your dog could understandably get confused. Especially if you are considering competing, it will be a pressurized situation, so you do not want any possibility of confusion.
As with all types of training, consistency, repetition, and planning produce results. Agility training can be excellent and great fun, but do not force it. Some dogs may not like it or may find it stressful. So if it is something you want, and they like, then it could be an incredible journey for you both.
