Firstly, barking is an essential way of communicating for dogs, so it shouldn’t be trained out of them entirely. 

They might need the toilet, they might be hungry, or they might need to tell another canine to back off. However, some dogs do get into the habit of barking incessantly or just for attention. In these cases, dog training is essential. Nuisance barking makes the home environment a less relaxing place, and it will limit what you can do outside. For example, you could feel nervous about taking your doggie to the pub if you think your pet will be barking the entire time. 

The importance of dog training

You have a responsibility to train your dog, and training isn’t about laying down the law. It is about giving the dog guidelines so they can live safely and securely in the human world. They need to know when they can play, where they can play, where they can go to the toilet, how to walk on a leash, how to walk to heel, how to behave around humans, and how to behave around other dogs. 

There are many different ways to train dogs and many other things you can teach them to do, but nowadays, they revolve around positive reinforcement. For instance, if you are housetraining a puppy or rescue dog, then every time they go to the toilet in the right place or time, you shower them with praise, treats, or use a clicker. This solidifies positive actions. If they wee on your favorite rug, you do not punish them. You take them to the place they should go to the toilet and issue the command you have been using to get the positive action like “wee wee.” Eventually, the dog will be trained to go to the spot they are meant to automatically. 

How to train your dog to speak

• Reward: Find something that the pooch reacts to positively. So that when they do something you want them to, then they are rewarded for it. A tasty treat is usually the best bet, but clickers and cuddles work too. Maybe try all three together for stronger reinforcement. 

• Command: Once you have the dog’s attention, then utter an order along with a signal that you have not used in other parts of their training. Like “speak” and give them the thumbs up. The verbal command should be short, sharp, and spoken with authority but not aggression. The signal should also be simple and not overly elaborate.

• Instigate: You want to start every training session with the dog being calm, quiet, and attentive. So, when the training begins, you will have to do something that makes them bark. You may have to get them riled up and excited, which isn’t something that is usually recommended in other types of training. Keep using the command and signal. Then once they bark, give them the treat, click, or cuddle. Keep repeating this process and keep rewarding them for barking. 

• Calm: Then you try to calm them down and end the training session. Your aim is that eventually, you can say the word and give the signal, and they will provide you with are bark.

How to train your dog to sing

Once you have taught them to speak, you can teach them to sing. 

The method you have used to get them to speak is easily adjusted to get them to sing. 

You will need to use a different command, usually “sing,” and use an additional signal. 

Then you make a noise like a bark, whine, or howl. When the dog repeats back to you something similar, then you reward them. 

Once they do this regularly, you can get them to combine noises in a repeatable fashion to start with. Then they might start making up their songs. But only after being given the “sing” command.

It is essential to understand that dogs should not be silent. They are social animals, and they like to communicate with people and other dogs. It is crucial that they can still do this. They need to feel comfortable enough to share with you without feeling nervous or scared. 

However, it is also essential to recognize that nuisance barking is a negative trait, and it is not something you have to put up with. This is often the reason why dogs can be put into shelters. They display certain behaviors that don’t suit the idealized perfect life an owner has in their mind of owning a dog. So instead of training the dog correctly, they just give up and get rid of it.

By owning a dog, you have a responsibility of care, which you should take seriously. It is sporadic to find an untrainable dog. It is just that some dogs require more effort and time to be trained effectively. 

So, recognize that all dogs are different and have different personalities and take the time to train them properly.
